About air rifles

Air rifles are air weapons that work on the basis of air pressure, as this air pressure creates momentum for the projectile. Air rifles come in many different types, from different brands and in many designs, so there is something for every need. In addition, air rifles are also used for several purposes. It can be for competitive shooting, for shooting at targets at home in the garden or something completely different. Within air rifles there are three different types; spring, gas piston and PCP air rifles, which we will explain below. When purchasing our air rifles here on the website, you can see which type the applicable air rifle is by reading the specification for each individual air rifle. In the store, we will of course always help you, so that you are not in doubt about the type of air rifle. Here we can also advise you, so that you can choose the type that you think suits you best. If you have questions about the law and the rules surrounding air rifles, you are always welcome to check our FAQ or contact us.

4.5 mm air rifles do not require a permit - However, you are not allowed to hunt with 4.5 mm air rifles, you must upgrade to at least 5.5 mm, where you must be a hunter and have a hunting license.
Air weapons with CO2 are also illegal in Denmark, regardless of whether they are pistols or rifles.

Air rifles with spring chamber

The spring air rifle is the classic, "old-fashioned" air rifle with a spring chamber, as many people know it. The spring air rifle has been used for many years, and for good reason. It is one of the air rifles that is easiest to shoot and reload. In addition, it does not require much maintenance. When you use this type of air rifle, the spring in the air rifle must be cocked, and this is done by breaking the barrel or the charging rod on the rifle. Here you can then put the shot in the barrel before the charging rod or the barrel is moved back again. When you then fire your shot, this releases the spring that was cocked. This causes the air in the spring chamber to be compressed, so that the shot is fired due to the air.

Just like when shooting a regular rifle, you will also experience recoil or kickback when using a spring air rifle. Some will see this as something positive because it feels more like shooting a rifle, while others will prefer to avoid experiencing recoil. Be aware that you should never fire the rifle while the barrel is broken or while there is no shot in it. If you fire the air rifle with a spring chamber without any shot in it, you can, in the worst case, destroy the rifle completely.

Gas piston air rifles

The gas piston air rifle is a newer type than the classic spring chamber air rifle and is being sold more and more. The gas piston air rifle works in a way a bit like the spring chamber air rifle. However, there is the difference that the compression of air is done in reverse. In the gas piston air rifle, the air in the chamber is compressed when you load the rifle, and thus you are ready to shoot right there.

If you want to buy a gas piston air rifle, there are different options. There are types where the barrel itself must be broken when it is loaded, and other types that have a fixed barrel and instead a loading rod. When you need to use your gas piston air rifle, either the barrel or the loading rod is broken. In this way, the air is compressed in the chamber. Here the rifle is then loaded with the shot and the loading rod or barrel is moved back. When fired, the compressed air expands again and shoots the shot. Remember that you should never fire your air rifle while the barrel is broken.

PCP air rifles

The PCP air rifle, like the gas piston air rifle, is a newer type. The abbreviation stands for Pre-Charged Pneumatic, and this type is also being sold more and more. For these types of air rifles, either a hand pump or a diving cylinder is used, which is used to get air into a cylinder in the rifle. Here, the air is compressed to around 200 bar, and this pressure drops after each shot. Therefore, it is important when you buy a PCP air rifle that you also buy either a hand pump or a diving cylinder. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Be especially aware that you will need an extra control valve for the diving cylinder if you choose this, and that the hand pump requires you to take some breaks when filling with air, as the heat can otherwise dry out the rifle inside.

One of the best reasons to buy a PCP air rifle over some of the other types is that you completely avoid recoil. Although there are different opinions about recoil, it will improve your shooting if it is completely avoided, and you will experience a lot of fun with it. Be aware that it can be harmful to the rifle if the cylinder is completely emptied of air. Therefore, you should fill the cylinder before then, preferably when the pressure is down to around 100 bar. This way, your PCP air rifle can last as long as possible.
Several of our PCP air rifles come with a magazine and some of them are even semi-automatic, so you can repeat the shots faster.
