Archery

Archery is shooting with a bow and arrow at a target – in the garden, at a club or on a marked course in the countryside. It takes calm, repetition and a consistent technique, which is exactly why it is an activity where children and adults can train side by side. In this category you will find junior and beginner bows plus the accessories that keep arrows and equipment going: nocks, vanes, arm guards, sights and targets.

The range comes from EK Archery and Barnett. From EK Archery there are the compound bows Chameleon (910 mm long, 4.5–6.8 kg draw weight), Kirupira junior (6.8–9.1 kg) and Firestar junior (13.6 kg) – the last two supplied with a 1-pin sight – plus Buster junior with adjustable draw weight from 6.8 to 13.1 kg. The Crusader Recurve in small is a simple recurve bow with a 5.4 kg draw weight. Barnett supplies the compound bows Wildhawk, Vertigo and Vortex Lite, where the Vortex Lite has adjustable draw weight so it can keep up as the archer grows, as well as the Quicksilver recurve bow at 6.8 kg.

What to look for

  • Compound or recurve: A compound bow has cams that reduce the force at full draw – on the Kirupira and Firestar this is stated as about 65% easier to hold. A recurve bow such as the Crusader or Quicksilver is mechanically simpler and gives a direct feel of the draw.
  • Draw weight and adjustment: The draw weight must match the archer's strength. Bows with adjustable draw weight, such as the Buster junior and Vortex Lite, can be turned up as technique and strength develop, so the bow does not need replacing as quickly.
  • Arrows and maintenance: The arrows must suit the bow and the archer's draw length. Barnett Junior arrows are 28" (approx. 711 mm). Nocks and vanes from EK Archery are available for both wooden and fibreglass arrows, so a broken nock or a torn vane can be replaced instead of throwing the arrow away.
  • Target and backstop: The EK 40x40 target is a paper target face and must be mounted on a backstop, such as a foam target or straw boss, that can stop the arrows. Make sure there is a safe background behind the target.
  • Rules: Hunting with a bow is subject to national rules, which may include a hunting licence, a bow hunting test and requirements for arrow weight and impact energy. The bows here are junior and beginner bows for target archery. For rules on purchase, age and use – check the regulations in your country.

Who is it for?

The category suits families and juniors who want to get started with target archery, and the new archer who wants to learn the technique on a bow with a manageable draw weight. Accessories such as an arm guard, a fibre-optic sight and spare vanes make it easy to keep the equipment going season after season.
