Tents & Sleeping Gear

Spending the night outdoors is about more than the tent itself. You need a roof over your head, something to sleep in and something to lie on – and ideally something to sit on once camp is set up. In this category you will find tents, tarps, hammocks, sleeping bags, sleeping mats and folding chairs, as well as the small accessories that make the camp work: pegs, guy lines and a peg mallet.

The tents come from Trespass, who also supply folding chairs and a fleece blanket, while the sleeping bags come from Pentagon Tactical and Highlander. Pentagon also supplies the 3 x 3 m Wild Tarp, aluminium pegs and guy line. For hammock fans we have Ticket To The Moon and the OutdoorStore series with hammocks, mosquito nets, tree straps and Smart Tarp. Walkstool, Helikon-Tex and Coghlan's add a folding stool, tarp pegs and reflective guy line. The range runs from a single tent peg up to a complete hammock set.

What to look for

  • Tent, tarp or hammock: A tent such as the Trespass Sentry (1 person) or Battuta (2 persons) gives an enclosed space with built-in mosquito netting. A hammock with a tarp over it is easier to pitch in woodland where the ground is uneven or wet, but needs trees at a suitable distance.
  • Sleeping bag temperature ratings: Look at the comfort rating, not the extreme rating. The Pentagon Sentinel has a comfort rating of 15 °C and the Pentagon Major 10 °C, so they suit summer and mild in-between nights. The Highlander Defender 350 and 450 are mummy bags for colder nights.
  • Insulation from the ground: Even a warm sleeping bag loses heat to cold ground. The Highlander Kip Mat is self-inflating, while the Nap-Pak is inflatable, weighs 415 g and packs smaller.
  • Mosquito net for the hammock: Both OutdoorStore and Ticket To The Moon have nets that pull over the hammock, and the OutdoorStore set combines hammock and mosquito net in one pack.
  • Pegs and guy lines: Pentagon and Helikon-Tex have aluminium pegs, and our 210 mm glow-in-the-dark tent pegs and Coghlan's reflective guy line make the camp easier to see in the dark.

Who it suits

The category covers the shelter trip with hammock and tarp, the hike with a light 1-person tent and the classic camping trip with sleeping bag, mat and folding chair. If you already have the tent, this is often where you will find the sleeping gear and accessories you are missing.
