What to look for
Binoculars: 8x42 and 10x42 are the most versatile formats. 8x gives a steadier image and a wider field of view, while 10x gives more detail at distance. ED glass, as in the Hawke Endurance ED, reduces colour fringing against the light.
Compass: A compass with a transparent baseplate and scale can be used directly on the map. A simple pocket compass is enough as a back-up to GPS and phone.
Light: A head torch keeps your hands free, a lantern lights up the whole camp, and a powerful flashlight is best for seeing far. A Feuerhand hurricane lantern runs on paraffin and is independent of batteries.
Fire: A storm lighter such as the ClawGear MK II burns in windy weather, and a Zippo can be refilled. Always carry a spare source of ignition.
Paracord and small items: Paracord is used for everything from guy lines to repairs. A small microfibre towel from Trespass and a tick remover from Lifesystems take up almost no space but are good to have.
