Personal gear is the small stuff that has to come on every trip but is easily forgotten: bags that keep clothes and phone dry, a compass, a first aid kit and a tool for removing ticks. This category collects that kind of practical kit for hiking, shelter trips and days in the woods – things that take up little space in the backpack but solve a specific job.
The range includes Trespass, with a mini first aid kit containing a bandage, scissors, plasters and cleansing wipes, the Vastra compass with magnifier and map scales, Euphoria dry bags (10 and 15 litres) and a Zenith mesh bag measuring 20 x 46 cm. OutdoorStore has dry bags of 10 and 20 litres with taped seams and roll-top closure, a waterproof phone case with a clear front and mosquito wristbands. From Lifesystems come a tick remover card, tick tweezers and GlowMarkers, which charge from daylight and glow in the dark. There is also a 150 g folding 10-litre water bucket from Mil-Tec, plastic D-link carabiners from Pentagon Tactical, bottle openers from 101 Inc and PVC patches from Fosco.
What to look for
Dry bag volume: Choose the size by what goes in the bag – a change of clothes takes up less space than a sleeping bag or extra layers. Dry bags here come in 10 and 20 litres, and the Trespass set with 10 and 15 litres lets you keep clothes and kit separate.
Tick remover: The Lifesystems card fits on a key ring and has a magnifier, the tweezers give a precise grip, and the Quitmo remover comes in two sizes. Choose the type you find easiest to use.
Navigation and orientation: A baseplate compass such as the Trespass Vastra works without batteries. Combine it with GlowMarkers on tent guy lines or your backpack, so your kit is easier to find in the dark.
Weight and packed size: The Mil-Tec water bucket folds flat and is made for washing up and washing, not drinking water. Mesh bags and carabiners help keep your backpack organised.
