Food & Cooking Gear
Hot food and something to drink mean a lot when you are on a trip, sitting in a hide or out for a long game day. In this category you will find freeze-dried field rations, gas stoves and wood-burning stoves, cook sets, kettles, pans, mugs, cutlery, vacuum flasks, water bottles and hydration bladders – plus fire-starting gear and a little seasoning for your field food.
For the cooking itself, Highlander offers the Blade Fastboil 3 gas stove at 1.1 L and a windshield, BioLite the CampStove 2+ and Campstove Grill, while Petromax has the Hobo Stove BK1 and the Perkomax percolator. Stabilotherm and Lifeventure cover kettles, a hunting pan, the Ellipse tableware, thermal mugs and a titanium mug, and Feuerhand's Tamber table grill comes in several colours. Real Field Meal makes freeze-dried meals such as Chicken Tikka Masala, Pasta Provence and Vegan Chili Stew. Hydration comes from CamelBak (Crux reservoirs, vacuum flasks and water bottles) and LifeStraw Go 2.0, while Coghlan's, UCO and Zippo supply matches, fire steels and tinder. Finally, The General's Hot Sauce adds a bit more flavour.
What to look for
- Fuel and stove: A gas stove such as the Blade Fastboil 3 boils quickly and is easy to regulate, but needs gas canisters. A wood-burning or hobo stove burns twigs and wood pellets you find along the way, and a spirit burner from Tatonka is simple and reliable.
- Weight and pack size: If the kit has to be carried in your backpack, every gram counts. Titanium, foldable Flexi mugs and a nesting cook set save space, while enamel and cast pans belong in the car or at camp.
- Hydration system: A 2–3 L hydration bladder lets you drink without stopping and fits most backpacks with a hydration sleeve. A bottle is easier to fill and clean, and a vacuum flask keeps your coffee hot in the hide.
- Field rations: Freeze-dried food is light and keeps for a long time. Check how much boiling water a meal needs, so you know what size pot or kettle to bring.
- Fire starting: Always carry a backup that works in wet weather – waterproof matches, a fire steel or fire-lighting blocks.
