Campfire gear is about two things: getting the fire going, even when it is wet and windy, and being able to cook over it afterwards. In this category you will find fire starting in many forms – fire steels, storm lighters, waterproof matches, fire starter blocks and tinder – plus grill grates and campfire pans for cooking over an open fire. Most of it is compact and light enough to live in your backpack or hunting bag.
For fire starting, most items come from Coghlan's, with the Fire Disk of compressed cedar, wax-treated Fire Sticks, waterproof matches and the Flint Wheel, and from Haahr, which supplies storm lighters, petrol lighters and a Blue Flame lighter. UCO has waterproof matches and a FireStarting Kit with Sweetfire tinder and stormproof matches, while fire steels come from Lifesystems (Dual Action with magnesium and ferrocerium), Gerber, Highlander and Petromax. For cooking we carry the Stabilotherm hunting pan and BBQ grill grate, plus a folding grill grate from Coghlan's.
What to look for
Ignition for the weather: A ferrocerium fire steel also works when it is wet but needs dry tinder. Storm lighters such as the Haahr Stormlighter are made to hold a flame in the wind, and waterproof matches from UCO and Coghlan's are a simple backup in your bag.
Tinder: Wax-treated products such as Coghlan's Fire Disk and Fire Sticks, Zippo Easy Spark Tinder and Lifesystems tinder rolls make it easier to get a fire going, especially together with a fire steel. A Fire Disk can be broken into four pieces, so one disk lasts several fires.
All-in-one or separate parts: The Gerber Firestarter combines a fire steel, a waterproof tinder compartment and a whistle in one unit, and the UCO FireStarting Kit combines tinder and stormproof matches. If you already have a fire steel, adding tinder is enough.
Grate or pan: The Stabilotherm BBQ Grill Grate Large is stainless steel with folding legs and weighs 1470 g. Coghlan's folding grill grate is intended for cookware, not for putting meat directly on, while the 210 mm Stabilotherm hunting pan has a folding handle.
