A Zippo lighter with a fluid insert works by the cotton in the insert soaking up the fluid, and the wick carrying it up to the flame. Zippo recommends its own fluid because it is designed for exactly that construction: it burns clean, does not clog the wick and gives a stable flame. The fluid evaporates over time, even when the lighter is not used, so a lighter needs refilling regularly – even if it mostly stays in your pocket.

What you need to know before use:

• For windproof wick lighters: Fits Zippo's classic lighters with a fluid insert and other lighters of the same wick type.
• For Zippo hand warmers: Zippo's refillable hand warmers use the same lighter fluid, so one bottle covers both.
• Not for butane: The fluid must not be used in butane lighters, jet lighters or Zippo butane inserts – these are filled with lighter gas.
• How to refill: Remove the insert, lift the felt at the bottom and slowly drip fluid into the cotton until it is saturated. Refit the insert and wipe excess fluid off the lighter and your hands before lighting.
• Worn wick: If the flame becomes weak or uneven despite a full tank, the wick is often worn. Replace it with a new Zippo wick.

Maintenance and safety

• Lighter fluid is highly flammable, and the vapour can ignite. Always refill outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, away from open flames, sparks and heat sources.
• Do not overfill – excess fluid can leak and cause a fire hazard or skin irritation. Wash your hands after refilling.
• Store the bottle closed, upright, in a cool place and out of reach of children. The fluid is harmful if swallowed.
