Pellets for Air Rifles and Air Pistols – Precision in Every Shot

When you shoot an air gun, the pellet is the single biggest factor in your accuracy. Even the most expensive air rifle will shoot poorly if the ammunition does not suit the barrel. Ammunition is one of our specialities, and we carry a wide range of pellets for both air rifles and air pistols.

The range runs from our own brand, Storm Air pellets, to well-known names such as JSB, H&N Sport and Gamo. Whether you shoot competitively, hunt (where legal) or simply plink in the garden, we have the right pellets in stock.

Choosing a calibre: 4.5 mm or 5.5 mm?

The first step towards the right ammunition is knowing your gun's calibre:

  • 4.5 mm (.177): The most widespread calibre. It gives a flat trajectory and high muzzle velocity, which makes it ideal for target shooting and standard air rifles.

  • 5.5 mm (.22): A heavier calibre that delivers more impact energy and better stability in the wind. Well suited to powerful PCP air rifles and long-range shooting. See our range of 5.5 mm pellets here.
5.5 mm pellets are designed for powerful PCP rifles and magnum models
that need heavier ammunition for optimal accuracy and energy transfer.

Which pellet type should you choose?

The shape of the pellet determines how it behaves in flight and on impact:

  1. Domed (round-nose): The most versatile pellet. The aerodynamic shape gives maximum accuracy at most distances.

  2. Wadcutter: Made for paper target shooting. They cut a clean hole in the card, so your score is easy to count.

  3. Pointed: Gives maximum penetration in hard targets – great for plinking at cans.

  4. Hollow Point: Designed to expand on impact, which maximises energy transfer.

Quick guide Which pellets should you choose?

Three things decide it: calibre, head shape and weight. Here is the short version.

1CalibrePellets must match your air gun. The calibre is marked on the barrel or in the manual.
2Head shapeThe shape decides what the pellet does best.
WadcutterTarget shooting at 10 m. Clean holes in the target.
DomedAll-round. Flies best at longer range.
PointedDeeper penetration at short to medium range.
Hollow pointHollow tip that expands on impact.
SlugsOnly for high-power PCPs. H&N recommends at least 25 J.
3WeightLight pellets for low power, heavy pellets for powerful air guns and longer range.
Light4.5 mm: 0.51 g · 5.5 mm: 0.93 gTarget shooting and low-power air guns
Medium4.5 mm: 0.55–0.67 g · 5.5 mm: 1.03–1.17 gAll-round for most air rifles
Heavy4.5 mm: 0.87 g and up · 5.5 mm: 1.64 g and upHigh-power PCP air rifles and longer range

The weights are examples from the JSB Exact range.

Test a few tins. Every barrel has its favourite pellets. Buy 2–3 different ones, or a sample pack, and shoot them at the same distance. The number after the calibre (e.g. 4.50, 4.51 or 4.52) is the head diameter, and a single hundredth of a millimetre can make a difference.
