When people think of an air rifle, most picture the classic break-barrel rifle. It is a very common type of air gun, and for good reason. A break-barrel air rifle is known for being very easy to use, reliable and always ready to shoot. Spring or gas ram (IGT)? – Which should you choose?

Inside a break-barrel rifle sits the power plant that sends the pellet on its way. Today there are two main systems, each with its own advantages:

• Classic spring: This is the traditional system, where a powerful steel spring is compressed when you break the barrel. It is proven technology that is very durable and easy to repair. A springer gives an authentic "kick" that many shooters love.

• Gas ram (IGT, Vortex etc.): Here the steel spring is replaced by a sealed cylinder of compressed gas (a bit like the gas strut on a car's tailgate).

  • Advantages: You get a smoother trigger, less vibration and a quieter shot. The system is also not harmed by being left cocked for a long time, which makes it ideal for pest control and zeroing.

Optics and pellets that hit the mark

Although many break-barrel rifles come with open sights, you can lift the experience considerably with the right equipment:

• Riflescope: Because break-barrel rifles have recoil, a robust scope is important. We recommend optics from Vortex or Vector Optics, which are built to withstand the vibration.

• Storm Air pellets: Accuracy starts with the projectile. We recommend our own Storm Air pellets, developed specifically to deliver high accuracy and a stable trajectory in air rifles.
