Does owning an air rifle require a weapons permit?

As long as the caliber of your air rifle is under 4.5 mm, it does not require a permit. However, if you want an air rifle with a larger caliber, a weapons permit has been required since 2012 to own and use such an air rifle. However, the vast majority of air rifles are for hobby use, and there are far between weapon permits for this, primarily because they very rarely come above a caliber of 4.5 mm. However, it is important to always include this in your research when you are investigating which air rifle should be your next air rifle.

In addition to the rules on air rifles over 4.5 mm, you must be 18 years of age to purchase any air rifle. If you are not yet 18 years of age, you must have a hunting license and be a member of any shooting association. You must also always be aware that you can store your air rifle correctly and securely, so that the wrong people cannot get to it.

The air rifle for hobby or game hunting

Most people know the air rifle from the trip to Tivoli, where people shoot at small targets in the hope of winning a small prize. This is also primarily the type of shooting target that most air rifles are used for. The vast majority of air rifles with a caliber below 4.5 mm are often used at home in private homes on a large plot of land, where there is space and the possibility of keeping a safe distance to shoot at targets for cans. For this purpose, there are also no great requirements for what the air rifle must be capable of.

If this is the purpose of owning an airgun, it first requires the proper permits from the municipality and possibly others who may have influence in the area. If you want an airgun to be able to control a smaller animal population in this way, it requires an airgun with a caliber of at least 5.5 mm, a firing speed of 200 m/s and the proper permit of course. Depending on the air pressure on this type of airgun, it may be an advantage to invest in a silencer to make the airgun almost silent and easier for you to approach your targets.
