How to choose the right hop-up and hop-up bucking
The hop-up system is one of the most important parts of an airsoft gun, as it affects the accuracy and range of the BB. By choosing the right hop-up bucking, and upgrading the hop-up unit if needed, you can get noticeably better performance.
Choose the right hardness
The degree rating tells you how hard the bucking is. The more powerful the gun, the harder the bucking you need. Otherwise the BB pushes the rubber aside and gets too little backspin. Maple Leaf recommends this split:

Material: silicone or not
- Silicone: More flexible and copes better with cold. A good choice if you play a lot in winter.
- Non-silicone: Durable and more resistant to wear, but can stiffen in the cold.
Rubber gets stiffer when it is cold, so in winter it can pay to go one step softer.
Sniper rifles
Many sniper rifles are based on the VSR-10 system, and most VSR buckings fit them, such as the Maple Leaf Decepticon and MR. Sniper rifles typically shoot harder than other guns and therefore need 70° or harder. The L96 and MB series, Type 96 and Silverback SRS use their own systems, so always check which model the bucking is made for.
Choose the right hop-up unit
If you want to take your hop-up system to the next level, upgrading the hop-up unit itself can be a good idea:
- Standard unit: Fine for beginners, but limited in adjustment.
- Proprietary units: Purpose-designed hop-up units that fit specific guns.
- TDC (top dead center): Gives more precise adjustment of the hop effect and is recommended for sniper rifles and DMRs.
Pros and cons of upgrading
- Pros: Better accuracy, longer range and more control over the BB's trajectory.
- Cons: Can be expensive if both unit and bucking need replacing, and the wrong combination can give inconsistent shots.
How to change the hop-up bucking
- Remove the barrel and the old hop-up bucking.
- Clean the inner barrel thoroughly of dirt and residue.
- Fit the new hop-up bucking correctly on the barrel so it sits tight.
- Reassemble the gun and adjust the hop-up until the BBs fly straight.
When should you upgrade?
If you experience inaccurate shots or limited range, or your gun is not making the most of its power, it may be time to upgrade your hop-up system. Find hop-up parts for AEGs, sniper rifles and gas and CO2 pistols.
