The hop-up system is one of the most important parts of an airsoft gun, as it affects the accuracy and range of the bullet. By choosing the right hop-up rubber and possibly upgrading the hop-up unit, you can get significantly better performance.
Hop-up rubber options
Hop-up rubber is available in different types and hardnesses to suit different needs:
- Hardness:
- Soft rubber (50°-60°): Ideal for low FPS weapons (<350). Provides good grip on the bullet and improves accuracy.
- Medium rubber (60°-70°): Perfect for all-round use and weapons with medium FPS (350-450).
- Hard rubber (70°-80°): Used for high FPS (>450). Provides less wear, but requires a stronger spring to function optimally.
- Material:
- Silicone: More flexible and works well in cold conditions.
- Non-silicone: Durable and more resistant to wear and tear, but can become stiff in the cold.
Choose the right hop-up device
If you want to take your hop-up system to the next level, upgrading the hop-up unit itself might be a good idea:
- Standard unit: Good for beginners, but limited in adjustment options.
- Proprietary units: Custom-designed hop-up units that fit specific weapons.
- TDC (Top Dead Center): Provides more precise adjustment of the bounce effect and is recommended for sniper rifles and DMRs.
Advantages and disadvantages of upgrades
- Advantages:
- Increased precision and longer range.
- Better control over the ball's trajectory.
- Disadvantages:
- Can be expensive if both the hop-up unit and rubber need to be replaced.
- Incorrect combination may cause unstable performance.
How to change hop-up rubber
- Remove the barrel and the old hop-up rubber.
- Clean the inner barrel thoroughly to remove dirt and residue.
- Install the new hop-up rubber correctly on the barrel so that it fits tightly.
- Reassemble the barrel and adjust the hop-up until you achieve optimal accuracy.
When should you upgrade?
If you are experiencing inaccurate shots, limited range, or if your weapon is not utilizing its FPS optimally, it may be time to upgrade your hop-up system.
