Benchmade 565BK-02 Mini Freek

The Benchmade 565BK-02 Mini Freek is a compact EDC folding knife with a tri-colour G10 handle and a 76.2 mm drop-point blade in CPM-M4 with a black Cerakote finish. At 81 g and 103 mm closed it is easier to carry in the pocket than the full-size Freek, but keeps the full, contoured grip.

The Mini Freek is Benchmade's scaled-down version of the Freek, made at the request of users who wanted the distinctive handle in a more pocket-friendly size. The 565BK-02 stands out with its black M4 blade and the easily recognisable tri-colour G10 handle, whereas the Freek 560, for example, uses carbon fibre and S90V.

CPM-M4, tri-colour G10 and AXIS lock

Five features that make the Mini Freek a compact knife with a hard blade:

• CPM-M4 powder steel (62–64 HRC): A high-speed tool steel with high wear resistance and good toughness. The hardness is above S30V and S90V, so the edge holds up well under hard use – on the other hand, M4 is not stainless and needs more care.
• Black Cerakote finish: A ceramic coating that protects the blade flats against moisture and wear. It is important protection on a steel that is not stainless, but the edge itself is unprotected.
• 76.2 mm drop-point blade, 2.64 mm thick: A versatile blade shape with good control over the tip and low cutting resistance in everyday tasks such as packaging, cord and food.
• Tri-colour G10 handle, 13.84 mm thick: G10 is a glass-fibre laminate that does not soak up water and gives a secure grip, even in wet weather. The shape of the handle fills the hand, even though the knife is compact.
• AXIS lock and reversible clip: Benchmade's crossbar lock works the same from both sides, so the knife is Ambidextrous. The black split-arrow clip is reversible and carries the knife tip-up.

Maintenance and safety

• Wipe the blade after use and give the edge a thin coat of oil – M4 is not stainless. Give the AXIS lock and pivot a drop of knife oil now and then.
• Do not use the knife as a pry bar or screwdriver – the blade is made to cut, not to twist.
• Keep your fingers clear of the edge when folding the blade, and guide it all the way closed with the lock pulled back.
• Check the regulations in your country before carrying the knife in public.
