Benchmade 551SBK-S30V Griptilian

The Benchmade 551SBK-S30V Griptilian is a full-size folding knife with a black Grivory handle and an 87.6 mm drop-point blade in CPM-S30V with a black finish. The knife weighs 110 g, measures 117 mm closed and is made for daily use at work, in the workshop and outdoors.

Designed by Mel Pardue, the Griptilian has for many years been one of Benchmade's most widely used work knives. The recipe is simple: a handle shaped for comfort and control through a full working day, a well-balanced steel and a lock that works the same for right- and left-handers. The 551SBK-S30V is the full-size Griptilian in all black – black blade and black handle – while the 556 model is the smaller Mini Griptilian.

Five features that make the Griptilian a versatile work knife:

• CPM-S30V powder steel (58–60 HRC): A stainless steel developed specifically for knife blades, with an even balance between edge retention, corrosion resistance and toughness. It holds an edge longer than classic steels such as 440C and is easier to sharpen than harder super steels such as S90V.
• Black blade finish: The black surface gives a matt, non-reflective blade that matches the handle, plus an extra layer of protection on the blade flats.
• 87.6 mm drop-point blade, 2.92 mm thick: A classic, versatile blade shape with good control over the tip. The blade is slightly heavier than on many light EDC knives, giving a sturdy blade for rougher everyday tasks.
• Grivory handle: Glass-fibre reinforced polyamide that is light, impact-resistant and does not get cold or slippery like metal. The handle is 16.26 mm thick and gives a full grip, even with work gloves.
• AXIS lock and tip-up clip: Benchmade's crossbar lock works the same from both sides, so the knife is Ambidextrous, and the blade can be opened and closed one-handed. The clip carries the knife tip-up in the pocket.

Maintenance and safety

• Wipe the blade after use, and give the AXIS lock and pivot a drop of knife oil now and then – especially after rain and damp.
• Do not use the knife as a pry bar or screwdriver – the blade is made to cut, not to twist.
• Keep your fingers clear of the edge when folding the blade, and guide it all the way closed with the lock pulled back.
• Check the regulations in your country before carrying the knife in public.
