About Benchmade 535FE-2602 Bugout

The Benchmade 535FE-2602 Bugout is a lightweight EDC folding knife in the Taiga Green edition, with a handle in anodised 6061-T6 aluminium and brown Canvas Micarta inlays. The 82 mm drop-point blade is CPM-S90V with an FDE PVD Battlewash finish, and the details are done in Burnt Copper. At 71 g and 107 mm closed, it is made for everyday carry.

The Bugout series is Benchmade's take on a folding knife where weight is kept down without compromising on the lock or the blade steel. The Taiga Green version combines that low weight with a super steel that holds an edge longer between sharpenings than the steel in most EDC knives.

CPM-S90V, aluminium/Micarta and AXIS lock

Five features that make for a light knife with long edge retention:

  • CPM-S90V powder steel (59–61 HRC): Stainless steel with around 9 % vanadium. It offers better wear resistance and edge retention than S30V and S35VN, but takes longer to sharpen.
  • FDE PVD Battlewash finish: A hard-wearing PVD coating that protects the blade and gives a matte surface where signs of use blend in naturally.
  • 82 mm drop-point blade, 2.29 mm thick: A versatile blade shape with good tip control and low cutting resistance in everyday tasks.
  • 6061-T6 aluminium and Canvas Micarta handle: Aluminium gives stiffness at low weight, while the Micarta inlay offers better grip than smooth metal. The handle is only 10.67 mm thick.
  • AXIS lock: Benchmade's crossbar lock works the same from both sides, so the knife is Ambidextrous. The blade can be opened and closed one-handed, and the Deep Carry clip lets the knife ride low in the pocket.

Maintenance and safety

  • Wipe the blade after use, and give the AXIS lock and pivot a drop of knife oil at regular intervals – especially after rain and damp conditions.
  • Do not use the knife as a pry bar or screwdriver – a 2.29 mm blade is made for cutting, not twisting.
  • Keep your fingers clear of the edge when folding the blade, and guide it all the way in with the lock pulled back.
  • Check the knife-carry laws in your country before carrying the knife in public.
