About Benchmade 535SL-13 Bugout

The Benchmade 535SL-13 Bugout is a lightweight EDC folding knife in Crater Blue with a handle in anodised 6061-T6 aluminium. The 82.3 mm drop-point blade is CPM-S90V with a Cerakote Crushed Silver finish and is 2.29 mm thick. At 71 g and 107.2 mm closed, it is built to be carried every day.

The 535SL-13 combines the Bugout's aluminium handle with the most wear-resistant steel among the Bugout versions we stock. Where the 535BK-07 and 535BK-4 use M390, this version has CPM-S90V, and the silver-grey Cerakote finish gives a lighter look than its black-coated siblings – with the blue handle as a contrast.

CPM-S90V, Crater Blue aluminium and AXIS lock

Five features that give long edge retention in a light format:

  • CPM-S90V powder steel (59–61 HRC): A stainless steel with about 9% vanadium. It gives better wear resistance and edge retention than both S30V and M390, but takes longer to sharpen and should be sharpened on diamond stones.
  • Cerakote Crushed Silver finish: A ceramic coating in a light silver-grey tone that protects the blade flats against wear and moisture and hides signs of use better than a bright blade.
  • 82.3 mm drop-point blade, 2.29 mm thick: A versatile blade shape with good control over the tip and low cutting resistance – suited to everything from packaging to lighter outdoor tasks.
  • 6061-T6 aluminium handle: Anodised aluminium gives stiffness at low weight, and the handle is only 10.67 mm thick. Compared with Grivory it costs around 20 g, but gives a more substantial handle.
  • AXIS lock and Mini Deep Carry clip: Benchmade's crossbar lock works the same from both sides, so the knife is Ambidextrous and can be opened and closed one-handed. The reversible clip keeps the knife deep in the pocket.

Maintenance and safety

  • Wipe the blade after use, and give the AXIS lock and pivot a drop of knife oil now and then.
  • Use diamond stones when the S90V edge needs sharpening – ordinary stones work very slowly on this steel.
  • Do not use the knife as a pry bar, and keep your fingers clear of the edge when folding the blade with the lock pulled back.
  • Check the regulations in your country before carrying the knife in public.
