Benchmade 535BK-08 Bugout

The Benchmade 535BK-08 Bugout is an ultralight EDC folding knife with a Storm Gray Grivory handle and a black Cerakote-coated drop-point blade in CPM-S30V. The blade is 82 mm long and 2.29 mm thick, the knife weighs just 52 g and measures 107 mm closed. It is built to be carried every day – at work, in town and outdoors.

The Grivory versions are the lightest in the Bugout series. At 52 g the 535BK-08 weighs around 20 g less than the aluminium models such as the 535BK-07 and 535BK-4, and you notice that in light summer trousers or a running jacket. The grey and black combination gives a neutral look that suits both workwear and outdoor kit.

CPM-S30V, Storm Gray Grivory and AXIS lock

Five features that keep the knife light and practical:

• CPM-S30V powder steel (58–60 HRC): A steel developed specifically for knife blades, with an even balance between edge retention, corrosion resistance and toughness. It does not hold an edge quite as long as M390 or S90V, but it is considerably easier to sharpen on ordinary stones – an advantage if you maintain the edge yourself.
• Black Cerakote coating: The ceramic coating protects the blade flats against wear and moisture and gives a matt surface where signs of use do not stand out.
• 82 mm drop-point blade: A versatile blade shape with good tip control. At 2.29 mm thick, the blade cuts easily through cardboard, rope and food.
• Grivory handle: Glass-fibre reinforced polyamide is lighter than aluminium and grips better than smooth metal, even with cold or wet hands. It is why the knife stays at 52 g.
• AXIS lock and Mini Deep Carry clip: The lock works from both sides and makes the knife Ambidextrous, so the blade can be opened and closed one-handed. The reversible clip lets the knife ride deep and discreetly in the pocket.

Maintenance and safety

• Wipe the blade after use, and give the AXIS lock and pivot a drop of oil when the action starts to feel stiff.
• Do not use the knife to pry or twist – the thin blade and light handle are built to cut.
• Pull the AXIS lock back and keep your fingers clear of the edge while folding the blade.
• Check the regulations in your country before carrying the knife in public.
