Benchmade 535BK-07 Bugout

The Benchmade 535BK-07 Bugout is a lightweight EDC folding knife in the Burnt Brass version with a handle in anodised 6061-T6 aluminium. The 82.3 mm drop-point blade is CPM-M390 with a black Cerakote coating and is 2.29 mm thick. At 71 g and 107.2 mm closed, it is made for everyday carry.

The Bugout series is Benchmade's take on a folding knife where the weight is kept down without compromising on lock or steel. The 535BK-07 is one of the aluminium versions: it weighs around 20 g more than the Grivory models, but in return gets a stiffer metal handle and a warm brass-coloured anodising that contrasts with the black blade.

Five features that give a light knife with long edge retention:

• CPM-M390 (58–61 HRC): One of the most widely used super steels in premium EDC knives. The high wear resistance means a long time between sharpenings, and the high chromium content makes the steel practically stainless. The price is that it takes longer to sharpen than S30V and S35VN.
• Black Cerakote coating: A ceramic coating that protects the blade flats against wear and gives a matt, non-reflective surface. The edge itself is ground bright and needs normal care.
• 82.3 mm drop-point blade, 2.29 mm thick: A versatile blade shape with good control over the tip and low cutting resistance in everyday tasks, camp cooking and lighter hunting work.
• 6061-T6 aluminium handle: Aluminium gives stiffness and a solid feel at low weight, and the handle is only 10.67 mm thick. Smooth metal does, however, give less grip than Grivory when your hands are wet.
• AXIS lock and Mini Deep Carry clip: Benchmade's crossbar lock works the same from both sides, so the knife is Ambidextrous. The blade can be opened and closed one-handed, and the reversible Mini Deep Carry clip lets the knife ride deep in the pocket.

Maintenance and safety

• Wipe the blade after use, and give the AXIS lock and pivot a drop of knife oil now and then – especially after rain and damp.
• Do not use the knife as a pry bar or screwdriver – a 2.29 mm thin blade is made to cut, not to twist.
• Keep your fingers clear of the edge when folding the blade, and guide it all the way closed with the lock pulled back.
• Check the regulations in your country before carrying the knife in public.
