Benchmade 533BK-1 Mini Bugout

The Benchmade 533BK-1 Mini Bugout is the scaled-down version of the Bugout – an ultralight EDC folding knife of just 43 g with a Grivory handle. The 71.6 mm drop-point blade is CPM-S30V and 2.29 mm thick, and the knife measures 94.1 mm closed and 165 mm open. It is made for small everyday tasks and for anyone who wants a knife they barely notice in the pocket.

The Mini Bugout arrived after many requests for a smaller Bugout. The shape and AXIS lock are the same as on the full-size model, but the blade is about 11 mm shorter than on the 535 models, and the weight has been cut further. That makes the 533BK-1 an obvious choice as a light backup in a rucksack or as an everyday knife in a shirt pocket, where a larger knife would drag.

CPM-S30V, Grivory and AXIS lock in mini format

Five features that get a lot out of 43 g:

• CPM-S30V (58–60 HRC): A proven stainless powder steel designed for knives. It handles moisture well, has enough toughness for everyday use and takes sharpening without diamond stones – unlike harder super steels such as M390 and S90V.
• 71.6 mm drop-point blade: A versatile blade shape with good control over the tip. The thin 2.29 mm blade gives low cutting resistance for packaging, cord, fruit and small tasks outdoors.
• Grivory handle: Glass-fibre reinforced polyamide is lighter than aluminium and gives more grip than smooth metal. It is the main reason the knife weighs only 43 g.
• AXIS lock: The crossbar lock works the same from both sides, so the knife is Ambidextrous and can be opened and closed one-handed – even in the small format.
• Mini Deep Carry clip: The clip lets the knife ride deep in the pocket so only a small part shows. Together with the low weight, that makes the knife easy to carry every day.

Maintenance and safety

• Wipe the blade after use, and give the AXIS lock and pivot a drop of knife oil now and then – especially after rain and damp.
• Do not use the knife as a screwdriver or pry bar; a small, thin blade is made to cut, not to twist.
• A short handle leaves less room for your fingers – keep them clear of the edge when folding the blade with the lock pulled back.
• Check the regulations in your country before carrying the knife in public.
