Food for a crisis: why Real Field Meals are the ultimate choice for your emergency supplies

In a world where unpredictability has become part of everyday life, "prepping" is no longer just for the few. More and more people see the value of sensible home preparedness, so they can manage on their own if supply chains fail or the power goes out for a long time.

One of the most important pillars of any emergency supply is food. But it is not just about filling the cellar with tinned food. It is about nutrition, shelf life and – not least – morale. This is where Real Field Meal comes in as the gold standard.

Why freeze-dried food beats tinned food

Many people start their prepping journey in the local supermarket with tins. While tinned food has its place, there are three decisive reasons why professional field rations are superior:

  1. Nutrition and energy: Real Field Meal was developed for the Norwegian armed forces. That means each portion is packed with the right balance of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

  2. Shelf life and weight: Freeze-drying removes the water but preserves flavour and vitamins. That makes the pouches extremely light to keep in a backpack if you need to get out of the door fast.

  3. Taste: Morale is crucial in a crisis. Eating a hot meal such as Pasta Bolognese or Chicken Tikka Masala lifts your spirits markedly.

How much food you should keep in stock

The Danish Emergency Management Agency recommends being able to manage on your own for at least three days – check what the authorities in your country recommend. At Handelshuset Aulum, however, we often advise our customers to aim for a 7-day supply.

  • For 3 days: At least 6–9 hot meals per person plus snacks.

  • For 7 days: 14–21 hot meals.

It is a good idea to supplement your food with quick energy. Take a look at our range of field rations and snacks to find energy bars and high-protein snacks that need no preparation.

Preparation takes just one thing: hot water

The brilliant thing about Real Field Meals is how simple they are to prepare. You tear off the top of the pouch, add hot water, stir and wait 8–10 minutes. The pouch is your plate, so you save on washing up – essential if the water supply is cut off.

But remember: you need to be able to boil water without electricity! We always recommend keeping a reliable camping stove or gas burner at hand. A burner, for example, is extremely efficient, as it boils water in record time with minimal gas consumption.

Prepping is also for outdoor and hunting

Although we are talking about emergency preparedness here, these meals are also our most popular choice for hunters. When you are sitting in a hide or out hiking, it is the same light weight that makes the difference. Combine it with the right outdoor gear, and you are set for a good experience whatever the conditions.

3 quick tips for your food supply:

  • Rotate your stock: Use your meals on fishing trips and keep buying new ones, so your stock is always fresh.

  • Remember water: You cannot prepare the food without clean water. Make sure you have water containers or a water filter ready.

  • Have your tools in order: A good folding knife or multitool is indispensable for opening packs or fixing gear in camp.

Are you ready?

Starting your own supply doesn't have to be overwhelming. Start by buying 5–10 pouches of your favourite dishes and build up gradually. At Handelshuset Aulum we are always ready to advise you on which gear suits your needs.
