You have probably heard of archery before. But what actually is archery? Fortunately, there is a very simple answer. In archery, the aim is simply to send an arrow off with your bow and try to hit a specific target. In many cases that is a target face, where you score points depending on how close to the centre you hit. It is an activity many people love spending time on, and the equipment for the sport has developed rapidly for many years. Archery is also an Olympic sport.
Archery can be practised by both children and adults, so it is a sport that can bring families and friends together. You can become part of your local club scene, get plenty of fresh air and spend many good hours with each other and the other members. So find a club near you.
Where can you take up archery?
The short answer is that there are archery clubs in most regions, so wherever you live there is usually an opportunity to take up archery. There is no geographical excuse not to get started.
At every club you can take part at exactly the level you are at. Whether you are a beginner, experienced or perhaps even an expert, there are plenty of opportunities to join in.
What do you need as an archery beginner?
You will of course need a good bow and some arrows – that almost goes without saying. But there are actually several types of bow to choose from. For children, we definitely recommend the classic longbow, known for example from films such as Robin Hood. It is generally the easiest bow to control, which makes it good for beginners. It gives you an authentic, good experience and a clear sense of what archery actually demands of you: mental focus and good fine motor skills.
A recurve bow is for the slightly more experienced. It has the same strength and span as a longbow, but its limbs curve the opposite way. What is really clever about this type of bow is that it can be taken apart into several smaller parts. That makes it extremely easy to transport, which can be an advantage if you don't always have a car available when you head off to archery.
A compound bow is also an option. This type of bow is a little more advanced: it has more wheels and strings, which makes it a bit harder to draw. But once you have drawn the bow, you can put a lot of power into the arrow. And once the bow is drawn, you get a long aiming time, because it is very easy to hold for longer before you let the arrow fly.
