Are air rifles legal?
In most countries, air rifles are legal, but the law sets conditions that must be met. In many countries there is a minimum age for buying an air rifle, and you should of course always be careful, as air guns can be dangerous and cause harm to others. Rules often become stricter for air rifles above 4.5 mm (.177) calibre, as described below.
Air gun legislation
For some air rifles, more rules apply than just a minimum age. In some countries – Denmark, where we are based, is one example – anyone of age may buy and use air rifles and air pistols in 4.5 mm, while air and spring guns in larger calibres require a permit, which in practice means a hunting licence. Rules on calibre, power and licensing differ across the EU, so check the regulations in your country before you buy.
If you have a hunting licence
Where a licence is required for larger calibres, a hunting licence or permit gives you the option of buying and using air guns above 4.5 mm. Without one, a 4.5 mm air rifle may be the most powerful air rifle you can legally buy and use. The 4.5 mm calibre is also a good choice for competition shooting, target shooting and shooting galleries.
Propellants and transport
Some countries also restrict which propellants may be used in air guns that fire metal pellets. When you transport your air gun, keep it in a bag, case or similar, so it is not visible in the car or carried openly in the street.
Can you hunt with a 4.5 mm air rifle?
In many countries, a 4.5 mm air rifle may not be used for hunting, while pest control of species such as rats and mice may be allowed. Check the local rules, act responsibly, and make sure the animal is dispatched quickly and humanely.
