Real Avid Bore Boss Barrel Cleaner, .17/4.5 mm

The Real Avid Bore Boss is a pull-through barrel cleaner in .17 calibre (.177/4.5 mm), with brush and mop combined on a single 813 mm (32") cable. You feed the cable in from the chamber end, clip on the handle and pull the whole system through the barrel in one stroke: first the phosphor bronze brush loosens fouling and deposits, then the braided mop collects the dirt.

When not in use, the cable winds into the round Flex-Case handle, which also protects brush and mop from dirt and keeps oil and solvent away from the rest of your kit. That makes the Bore Boss a cleaner that can live in a jacket pocket or range bag, so the barrel can get a quick clean at the range or after a hunt without carrying a cleaning rod.

What sets it apart from a classic cleaning rod:

• Brush and mop in one pass: The phosphor bronze brush loosens deposits, and the mop behind it removes them immediately – with a cleaning rod you have to swap between brush and patches many times.
• Cable instead of rod: A soft cable cannot bend or knock against the bore the way a long, thin rod can in small calibres, and you don't touch the crown at the muzzle.
• Self-storing Flex-Case handle: The cable winds into the polycarbonate handle with soft overmoulding, so nothing tangles or gets dirty in the bag.
• Integrated grip: The handle clips onto the cable and gives a secure, even pull, even when a tight-fitting mop has to go through the barrel.
• Calibre-specific fit: Brush and mop are sized for .17 calibre, so they fill the bore and reach the rifling – a universal cleaner for several calibres rarely fits all of them equally well.

Maintenance and safety

• Always check that the gun is unloaded before feeding the cable into the barrel. Pull from chamber to muzzle where possible.
• On air guns: follow the gun manufacturer's recommendation – some manufacturers advise against metal brushes in the barrel and recommend only cleaning pellets or felt pads. In that case, use the brush sparingly.
• Feel free to apply a little bore cleaner or gun oil to the mop, and wash the mop in warm soapy water when it is saturated with dirt. Let it dry completely before winding it back in.
• Replace the cleaner if the brush is worn or the mop starts to fray.
