About GATE Pulsar D HPA Engine without ETU
The GATE Pulsar D is an HPA engine with two solenoid valves and closed-bolt operation that replaces the cylinder, piston and cylinder head in a V2 gearbox. This version is the engine itself without ETU/FCU, so it must be controlled by an HPA version of GATE's optical control units – the Pulsar D is developed for the TITAN II Bluetooth for V2, and a special V3 tappet plate is available for V3 gearboxes.
With two valves, the nozzle and main air are controlled separately: one valve pulls the nozzle back so the next BB can drop into place, while the other releases the shot itself. In closed-bolt mode the nozzle sits forward and seals against the bucking before the air is released, which gives consistent feeding and makes the engine far less sensitive to the precision of the replica and installation than a single-valve engine. The engine can also be configured as open bolt, and because it uses standard AEG nozzles, you are not locked into a special nozzle system.
The technology behind the Pulsar D
What you get with two valves and closed bolt:
- Dual solenoid valve: Separate control of nozzle and main valve gives a stable and repeatable BB trajectory, even on full auto – unlike single-valve engines, where nozzle movement and shot share the same air pulse.
- Universal AEG nozzles: Five nozzle lengths for MP5 and M4/M16 are included, and you can also use a standard AEG nozzle. GATE highlights that the tolerances between nozzle and nozzle guide eliminate mid-cap problems.
- Automatic cycle synchronisation: Together with the TITAN II Bluetooth, the nozzle position is registered optically with every shot, and the return time is continuously adjusted as the pressure from the magazine changes. Calibration therefore requires far fewer test shots.
- Low air consumption: Approx. 0.7 PSI per shot at 90 PSI with a 0.8 l/300 bar tank – lower than GATE's single-valve engines, which are around 1 PSI per shot.
- Adjustable feeding force: The tappet plate spring can be swapped for springs from your AEG, so the force can be matched to magazine type and rate of fire up to 40 RPS. The engine measures 102 × 25.4 × 38.5 mm and weighs 90 g.
Maintenance and safety
- Installing an HPA engine requires experience: the gearbox must be emptied, the engine placed fully forward against the front wall of the gearbox, and wires and air line routed without being pinched. We are happy to fit and set it up in our workshop in Aulum, Denmark.
- Only use high-pressure air via a regulator, and keep the operating pressure within 60–140 PSI (approx. 4.1–9.7 bar) – higher pressure can damage the engine. GATE recommends, for example, PolarStar MRS, Redline SFR or Wolverine STORM as regulators. The ETU and valves are powered by a small 7.4 V battery.
- The Pulsar D uses AEG nozzles and must not be combined with a nozzle sleeve. The air line has a 6 mm outer diameter and M5×0.8 thread in the engine. A QD fitting (US/EU) is not included and must be bought for your system.
- GATE advises against silicone buckings with Pulsar engines, because they wear faster and change properties with temperature swings. Rubber buckings such as Maple Leaf Mr. Hop, Madbull Blue, TNT Black with nub or G&G green typically work well. For servicing, the nozzle guide is unscrewed with the supplied tool, and worn O-rings are replaced.
