True Utility Ti Pocket Multi Tool

The True Utility Ti Pocket Multi Tool is a compact multitool that combines a 70 mm sheepsfoot blade and spring-loaded pliers with a wire cutter in one tool measuring just 103 mm closed. On top of that you get a screwdriver, saw, awl and bottle opener – the functions most people actually use outdoors, in the car, in the workshop or at the range. At 168 g and 36 mm wide, it sits in a pocket or a small pouch without the bulk of a full-size multitool.

The "Ti" in the name refers to the titanium nitride coating on the blade and tools – not to the tool being made of titanium. Blade and tools are 2Cr13 stainless steel with a TiN coating, while the handles are anodised aluminium. 2Cr13 is a corrosion-resistant steel that is easy to put a fresh edge on in the field, and the coating gives a harder, more wear-resistant surface than bare steel. True Utility have deliberately kept the number of functions down, so every tool is usable rather than cramming as many special tools as possible into the handle.

These are the key features of the True Ti Pocket Multi Tool:

• Lockback lock: The blade locks open with a lockback mechanism, so it cannot fold onto your fingers mid-cut – a clear difference from simple slipjoint blades without a lock.
• 70 mm sheepsfoot blade: A straight edge and rounded tip give good control for precise cuts in cord, tape, cable ties and packaging, and the blunt tip is less prone to accidental stabs than a pointed drop point blade.
• Spring-loaded pliers with wire cutter: The pliers open by themselves after each squeeze, so you can work one-handed, and the built-in wire cutter handles thin wire and cable ties.
• Locking tools: According to True Utility, the tools lock at both 90 and 180 degrees, so you can put force and leverage on the screwdriver without it folding back.
• TiN-coated steel and aluminium handles: The coating adds wear resistance and an even, dark finish, while the anodised aluminium handles keep the weight down. Thumb stud and screws are black oxide.

Maintenance and safety

• Always fold the blade fully closed after use, and keep your fingers clear of the edge when you release the lock.
• Wipe the tool down after use in rain and damp – 2Cr13 handles moisture well, but joints and springs benefit from being kept dry.
• Give the joints and the plier spring a drop of light oil if they start to feel stiff.
• The blade locks, so check the knife-carry regulations in your country before carrying the tool in public.
